Day 10
5/8
Today was awesome. It was my last day of working with MOCMI. The morning was uneventful but around noon, we went to check the Ko'ie'ie fish pond for turtle tangled in fishing line. Since the day had been so uneventful, I was going to head home from the fish pond. After snorkeling around for a little while, we found a juvenile green sea turtle with some fishing line around its neck and flippers. When we tried to cut the line off on the beach we realized that the line had been on the turtle for so long it cut into the turtles body. Back at the lab, we managed to get all of the line off but not without a lot of patience and precision. Due to the lack of blood flow that the flippers had received, they had begun to literally decompose on the animal. Fortunately though, when we put the turtle into a tank, it swam around which meant that the flippers weren't completely dead. Hours: 8

How cool! What a fascinating project. So glad to know that the turtle is still able to swim and survive!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the turtle will be able to go back out into the wild eventually?
