Day 6
5/4
Today I helped sort plastics that were gathered during a beach cleanup on the west side of the island. This was the second day of sorting as it had taken a long time to sort through all he trash. They had collected around 30 massive bags of trash. These bags were about a 6 foot cube so you can imagine how much plastic was inside. Most of the trash was plastic but there were some other pieces of trash such as tires and wood. One of the things that most surprised me was how much of the plastic was eaten by fish. Some bottle would only have the top two inches of them remaining with bite marks all around the bottom. Seeing that really made you think about the rest of the bottle.... Another things that was surprising was how much burned plastic there was. It seems as though a lot of people try to
burn plastic... Below is a photograph of some plastic that Meagan collected. It’s similar to the small plastic I had to sort. Hours: 5
