Day 9
5/7
Today was one of two days working at the MOCMI (Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute). MOCMI is the non-profit of the MOC and they do mostly coral work along with turtle work too. My morning started off with going out and emptying fishing line recycling bins. These bins were put in place by MOCMI to allow fishermen and other people to recycle their old line and tackle gear. Lead sinkers are quite expensive so reusing them as much as possible helps out the environment and saves money. After that we cleaned out some of the coral frag tanks. Below is a picture of some coral frags. The coral is cut into fragments and placed on tiles to grow. MOCMI grows coral at a faster speed by placing many frags on a tile instead of placing one big piece. The frags have to be from the same original animal but if done properly, this method can grow coral twice as fast. Hours: 6
